Examples of Coercion in Advertising

MAGAZINE ADVERTISING

TD Canada Trust: a full page ad that gives you a sense of warmth with the red and cream colours

1.      TD Canada Trust is responsible for the ad, advertising comfortable banking and support for raising a family.

2.      Elements that are coercive in the ad are: a baby’s face, a big comfy chair, and sheets on the wall.

Hampton Inn: a full page ad that shows a man eating breakfast in Hampton Inn

1.      Hampton Inn is responsible for the ad, advertising that if you stay at their hotel you’ll have a great start to the day.

2.      Elements that are coercive in the ad are: a man smiling eating breakfast, “all I want is…”, and advertising free HHonors points and airline miles.

SUCCESSFUL LOGOS                                                 

I believe simplicity is a major factor in a successful logo. It provides a message quick and clearly, and is easily recognized. You also want a memorable and engaging logo, with distinctive features and vivid colours. I chose the four following logos because I believe they are considered very successful logos. Starbucks coffe has a queen in the middle, persuading you to believe if you drink Starbucks Coffee you will be like a queen. Same with Corona Extra, with a crown on top. The Nike swoosh is also very successful and is known worldwide with its simplicity. And lastly, McDonalds, is a well known logo that gives a sense of happiness.

                                                             

Seeing Ourselves: Media and Representation

1. a) Will Ferrel (actor) : funny, non-serious, childlike

I admire his way of entertaining audiences and what he does to create comedy.

b) Lil Wayne (rapper) : notorious, gansta, confident

I admire his style and the lyrics he uses in his music.

c) Angelina Jolie (actor) : spy, secretive, sexy, action, smart

I amdire her acting skills, and how she can fit such serious and interesting roles.

d) Ya Boy (rapper)- humourous, joking, gangsta

I admire how he can turn his rap music into a comedy.

e) Tyra Banks ( host, model) : confident, serious but silly, helpful, beautiful

I admire her modeling skills, and her confidence to create her own entertaining T.V. show.
